Recently, we’ve been able to meet with several entrepreneurs and business owners to chat about their success, their struggle and what it took to get where they are today. And in our experience, we found that entrepreneurs have three things in common: drive, an openness to learn and a willingness to be different.
Some call it passion, but we like to call it drive (because, when the passion runs out, you still gotta have drive to keep pushing forward). And we can pretty much promise you more “no’s” than “yes's” when it comes to your proposal. But it only takes one “YES!” to move your business to the next step. Some people may doubt your plan for success, but you must have the drive to proceed in the “dog-eat-dog” world of Startup.
So, maybe you’re good at the accounting side of business but not so good at the sales part. This is where you need an openness to learn...the ability to ask for help. Because it can be really difficult to handle EVERY aspect of the business AND be good at it. On the flip side, maybe you have an established business but are ready to partner up and grow. This may require training for a new skill or looking at your business through the eyes of a fellow entrepreneur. Either way, you’re always learning as a successful business owner. And that’s just a fact.
The willingness to be different may be the most complex trait of all. Because the word “different” sometimes makes us uncomfortable. But what if being different simply meant that you stand out among your competitors? What if being different means you’re always reliable, always on time, and always strive for excellence? What if being different means you’re not just another player on the “dog-eat-dog” court, but that you’re not afraid to help someone else and give them a few tips of the trade? If being different is wrong, then we don’t wanna be right.
So, take a fellow business owner out to lunch (yes, buy their sandwich!). And just listen to what they have to say. You’ll be amazed at what you can learn in just 30 minutes.
